Geological Forcing of Surface Temperatures on Venus
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction. Epochs of widespread plains emplacement on Venus would have significantly perturbed atmospheric inventories of water and sulfur gases. These gases are potent infrared absorbers that act preferentially to block outgoing thermal radiation within carbon dioxide spectral windows. Small changes in their abundances can significantly alter the efficiency of the Venus atmospheric greenhouse and hence globallyaveraged surface temperatures [1]. However, they are also the primary reactants in producing Venus’ global cloud cover and hence high planetary albedo. Atmospheric water and sulfur dioxide together influence Venus’ surface temperature in two competing ways -by producing clouds which reduce solar forcing, and by amplifying the Venus greenhouse effect. In addition to possible rapid changes in the concentrations of these gases due to volcanic outgassing, other planetary-scale processes involving the transport, escape and crustal sequestering of volatiles affect abundances over time, driving changes in climate.

Geological Evidence for Petrogenetic Diversity on Venus: Implications for Future Exploration Strategies
Introduction: A long-standing, fundamental question in planetary geoscience is: "How similar are the geological histories of Earth and Venus, and when and how did their evolution diverge?" Did Venus once have oceans and a more Earth-like climate, as suggested by Pioneer-Venus data [1]? If so, when, how, and why did it transition to current conditions, and are traces of this early period, and th...
متن کاملGlobal geological map of Venus
The surface area of Venus ( 460 10 km) is 90% of that of the Earth. Using Magellan radar image and altimetry data, supplemented by Venera-15/16 radar images, we compiled a global geologic map of Venus at a scale of 1:10 M. We outline the history of geological mapping of the Earth and planets to illustrate the importance of utilizing the dual stratigraphic classification approach to geological m...
متن کاملThe surface of Venus
Venus is a planet that is similar to Earth in terms of some important planetary parameters (size, mass, position in the solar system, presence of atmosphere) and different in terms of other, equally important ones (absence of an intrinsic magnetic field, large atmospheric mass, carbon dioxide composition of the atmosphere, lack of water, very high surface pressure and temperature). The surface ...
متن کاملMechanisms for Lithospheric Heat Transport on Venus: Implications for Tectonic Style and Volcanism
The tectonic and volcanic characteristics of the surface of Venus are poorly known, but these characteristics must be closely related to the mechanism by which Venus rids itself of internal heat. On the other solid planets and satellites of the solar system, lithospheric heat [ransport is dominated by one of three mechanisms: (1) plate recycling, (2) lithospheric conduction, and (3) hot spot vo...
متن کامل3 Habitable Zones in Extrasolar Planetary Systems
If we ask the question about the possible existence of the life outside the Earth, we first have to determine the habitable zone (HZ) for our solar system. The HZ of distances between a main sequence star and an Earth-like planet is roughly defined as the range of mean orbital radii which imply moderate planetary surface temperatures suitable for the development and subsistence of carbon-based ...
